Reading & listening
I usually read something spooky at this time of year. This year it’s Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. Its subtitle, The Modern Prometheus, feels especially timely as AI companies bring LLMs into the world. I’d recommend it for the question it raises: what do we owe the world when we create something that can change it?
Stephen West’s Philosophize This! episode on Frankenstein is a good companion to the book.
I also recently read Doom Guy: Life in First Person by John Romero. It’s made me want to replay Doom and a few other id Software classics.
The book left me nostalgic for that era of game development and excited about the present. With AI, I feel some of that possibility opening up again: small teams making a big impact, even in today’s much more complex software ecosystems.
I’m also listening to Matt Swanson’s YAGNI podcast, which is currently exploring software factories.
This is a now page, inspired by Derek Sivers.
